Queen - It's a Kind of Magic
Queen – It’s a Kind of Magic

August 7, 2015: The majority of the Dutch Mason Blues festival had just been cancelled and I was feeling kinda bummed out. I needed to find something else to fill the void and thanks to Facebook, I became aware of a Queen tribute show taking place at The Bella Rose Arts Centre in Halifax. After making contact through Facebook, I asked if I could drive over to Halifax and take photos of the show. Ben Hopper the bands tour manager, made the neccessary arrangements for me to take photographs in The Arts Centre.

This performance was based on Queen’s 1986 “Magic” tour and in true “Freddie” fashion Taylor goes through a number of costume changes. The band also chose to keep the 1986 lighting look going rather then rather then make use of all the new technology available today. This technique really helped to simulate an 80’s feeling which made the audiences viewing experience similar to the real thing.

Giles Taylor aka “Freddie”

Trying to replicate the movements and vocal performances of the late Freddie Mercury would be a daunting task. Giles Taylor takes on this role for the tribute band Queen – It’s a Kind of Magic.

Guitar, Vocals, Richie Baker, Australia

Ritchie Baker handles the role of Brian May. Baker does a great job reproducing the unique playing style and sound that makes Queen so easy to identify. Baker also contributes to the band’s solid harmonies which are a must for any Queen tribute.

 Bass-vocals, Steve Dennett, South Africa

South Africa’s Steve Dennett portrays John Deacon looking after the bass parts and adding to the groups strong harmonies.

Drums-vocals, Kyle Thompson, Australia

The role of Roger Taylor was well looked after by Australian drummer Kyle Thompson. Thompson along with bassist Dennett, kept things tight and in time throughout the performance.

Queen – It’s a Kind of Magic put on a solid performance. They took the audience back to 1986 and gave them a good idea of just how powerful Queen’s live performance was. They are currently on a 29 date Canadian tour so go and check these guys out if they play anywhere close to you.
