July 31, 2015: Fans gathered at Alderney Landing for a concert featuring the band Journey who are famous for several classic songs and the voice of Steve Perry. While Perry is no longer part of Journey, the band continues to tour relentlessly, fronted by the “YouTube” sensation Arnel Pineda.
The show started at 7:45 PM when Neal “Vortex” Schon hit the stage to showcase his latest solo effort.
The entire set was totally instrumental and more in line with the first couple Journey albums that were released before Perry joined the group. Schon got to show the audience that he more then holds his own, with or without his band mates in Journey. Their set lasted about 45 minutes and they were well received by the fans gathered at Alderney Landing.
Journeys regular drummer ran into some legal issues and was replaced by renowned drummer Omar Hakim. Hakim handled the drumming for Schon’s Vortex set as well as Journey. This was the first time I have seen Hakin perform. He was a solid as a rock in both bands and I was not at all disappointed.
Journey opened the set with Seperate Ways and the string of hits continued throughout the night. Classics like Open Arms, Winds of March, Who’s Crying Now, and Any Way You Want It were spread through the set before ending the show with Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.
What can I say……beautiful weather mixed with 1 part Vortex and a powerful set by Journey
